To get your learners licence you need to visit a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) with your ID, proof of address, two ID photos, a completed LL1 form and the booking fee. You will write a computerised theory test covering road signs, rules of the road and vehicle controls. Most driving schools offer learners classes to help you prepare.

The number of lessons varies per person. Most learners need between 10 and 20 hours of practical instruction before they feel ready for the driving test. Complete beginners typically need more lessons, while people with some driving experience may need fewer. Your instructor will advise you when you are ready.

Code 8 (also called Code B) is the standard car licence for light motor vehicles up to 3,500kg. Code 10 (Code C1) allows you to drive heavy vehicles like trucks and minibuses above 3,500kg. Code 14 (Code EC) is for articulated trucks and vehicles towing trailers over 750kg, commonly used in logistics and long-haul transport.

The full process typically takes 3 to 6 months in South Africa. This includes time for learners classes, the learners test, driving lessons and waiting for a driving test appointment. DLTC appointment waiting times vary by location — rural areas are often quicker than major cities.

Costs vary depending on your province and chosen driving school. As a rough guide, budget R350 to R750 for learners classes, R250 to R350 per driving lesson, R500 to R800 for car hire on test day, plus DLTC government fees of around R200 to R300. Many schools offer bundled packages that include everything from learners prep to test day.

K53 is South Africa's official defensive driving system used for all driving licence tests. It includes specific rules for observations (mirror checks, blind spots), following distances, lane positioning and hazard perception. All driving tests in South Africa are based on the K53 system and your driving school will teach it to you throughout your lessons.

Yes, but your licence will be endorsed as automatic only, meaning you will not be legally allowed to drive a manual vehicle. Most driving schools recommend learning in a manual car so your licence has no restrictions. If you have difficulty with manual vehicles for medical or personal reasons, automatic is a valid option.

If you fail your driving test you will need to rebook and pay the test fee again. Your instructor will debrief you on what went wrong and you can take additional lessons before retrying. There is no limit to how many times you can attempt the test. Many people pass on their second or third attempt.

A PrDP is required if you want to drive professionally — for example as an Uber or Bolt driver, taxi driver, truck driver or any vehicle carrying passengers or goods for reward. You apply for a PrDP after obtaining your driving licence. Most driving schools can assist with PrDP applications.
